A Guide to Caustic Chemicals Used in Soap Making | Brenntag- potassium hydroxide in liquid soaps ,Today, the process of making soap most commonly involves reacting an organic acid with an alkaline chemical like potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide.Industrially, the caustic soda base used most often is sodium hydroxide, which is also called lye. The main difference between potassium and sodium soaps is consistency — usually, potassium makes a softer, more water-soluble soap than sodium.Making The Best Soap – Dr. Bronner'sThe saponification process is a simple one-step reaction with no waste generated: the glycerin is split off from the fatty acids, and the fatty acids combine with the sodium or potassium to form soap, while the hydroxide forms water. The result is soap, glycerin and water (no alkali remains in …
Potassium hydroxide is an extremely versatile cleaning agent. For example, potassium hydroxide is found in varied items such as liquid soaps, lotions, shampoos, hairsprays, and denture cleaners, but is also found in more industrial compounds such as oven cleaners, drain cleaners, driveway and concrete cleaners, in non-phosphate detergents, and in drain and pipe cleaners.
Potassium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the formula K OH, and is commonly called caustic potash.. Along with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), KOH is a prototypical strong base.It has many industrial and niche applications, most of which exploit its caustic nature and its reactivity toward acids. An estimated 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes were produced in 2005.
For solid bar soap, sodium hydroxide is used. For liquid soap, potassium hydroxide is used [2]. This inorganic compound comes in various forms including powders, flakes or pellets. Potassium hydroxide is applied differently in the manufacturing, industrial, medical, and chemical sectors.
Jun 23, 2021·Potassium Hydroxide Lye Flakes ( KOH) Potassium hydroxide is lye for soft and liquid soap making. Also known as KOH or Caustic Potash, it is a colorless white solid commonly found in flake, pellet or powder form.Like sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide is an essential ingredient in soap making as you can’t make soap without lye.
Liquid soaps are made with Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) instead of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to create a soft paste that dissolves readily in water. The issue with using KOH in soaps is that it can take a very long time to trace—more than 30-60 minutes of stick blending! On top of this, these soaps can also take many hours to …
Jun 01, 2013·Both are considered lye, but the potassium hydroxide is not strong enough to make a solid soap. It is only used for making liquid soaps. Therefore sodium hydroxide cannot be substituted for potassium hydroxide and vice versa because soap making recipes will have different quantity requirements for these two chemicals depending on the kind of ...

Potassium Hydroxide. SKU: 81018. Potassium Hydroxide or Caustic Potash is a type of lye used in cold process and hot process soap making. Potassium Hydroxide creates soap that has a putty-like, almost liquid texture and is great for making whipped soaps.
Answer: We make liquid soap using a hot process method. I use a big pot on my stove which I use just for soap. Most people use a crock pot. You will need * Potassium Hydroxide * Coconut oil * Olive oil * Castor oil You can use other oils but these oils I have chosen are good choices. Coconu...

Sodium hydroxide is used to make hard bar soap while potassium hydroxide is used to make liquid soap. Potassium hydroxide is harder to find and comes in flakes, not beads. The flakes are easier to work with but are still caustic, so you must wear gloves and protective eyewear.
As already said in another answer, it isn't a substitute. Cocamide DEA is used as part of a synthetic detergent formulation as a foam booster. Potassium hydroxide is used in making reap liquid soap to saponify the oils. Soap and synthetic detergen...
Sep 18, 2013·Sodium hydroxide lye is used for making solid soap, and potassium hydroxide lye is used for making liquid soap. Adding potassium hydroxide to your solid soap can make those bars mushy or liquidy. We haven’t used both in one soap recipe, so I’m not exactly sure how it would work!
Liquid soap is created by combining oils with potassium hydroxide (KOH), which can be purchased from Etsy or online soap-making supply stores. The purity level of potassium hydroxide can vary; my recipes are based on 90% purity, which is a commonly available type.
Apr 18, 2014·The primary difference between liquid soap and bar soap is the type of lye you use to convert the oils into soap. Bar soap uses sodium hydroxide. Liquid soap uses potassium hydroxide. After that, everything seems to change—or so I thought, from my reading. But then I met Colleen, and we had a DIY date.
Jun 27, 2021·Liquid Soap Methods. Potassium hydroxide is used as an alternative to sodium hydroxide in soap making when the end result is a softer soap. Since we will be making a shampoo that will be liquified, it’s the best option. I will say right now that what is available online for liquid shampoo tutorials is a mess.
Then you need potassium hydroxide! This caustic material helps convert fats and oils into soft soap. No matter how you learned the name of this material (KOH, potassium hydroxide or caustic potash), the key is knowing that you need this item to make handmade liquid or paste …

May 22, 2021·For liquid soap, we will be using KOH, potassium hydroxide. (Bar soaps use NaOH, sodium hydroxide). All true soaps use lye. (For more information about lye and why it is needed in soap, read my post about why soap needs lye.) Do not use NaOH, sodium hydroxide, to try to make liquid soap!
Potassium Hydroxide is widely used in soft soap products because of its softness and high levels of solubility; soaps comprised of potassium require less water to liquefy, and can therefore containing higher concentrations of cleaning agents than other liquid soaps that are not potassium-based .
Apr 23, 2021·Potassium soap consists of three main elements: water, lipids and potassium hydroxide. When the lipids meet the potassium hydroxide, a chemical reaction occurs, the result is mixed with water and liquid potassium soap is obtained.
Apr 12, 2020·The lye (Sodium Hydroxide mostly for soap bars and Potassium Hydroxide for liquid soaps) can be made into a very high pH solution and added to the oils upon which they start to react chemically to take on a new set of chemistry. During saponification the triglycerides (which are also known as triesters due to their structure) are broken open by ...
